Competition

Competitive dance is a popular, widespread activity in which competitors perform dances in any of several permitted dance styles— such as acro, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, modern, and tap—before a common group of judges.

Travel Teams

  • All competitions will take place in California with the exception of nationals in Vegas. We will compete in 5 mandatory dance competitions; 3 that are out of town (one of these will be at a convention), 1 in town as a full studio, and Nationals. Dancers who wish to compete at additional competitions are welcome to but will need to inform the studio at least 14 weeks in advance and be current on all fees.

    • All competition classes and extra practices are MANDATORY.

    • Students will be required to take two technique classes (1 Tech B or Shirley Winters Ballet class, & one Functional Stretch/Conditioning class) in addition to their team classes. Lyrical team & Hip-Hop students must also take a Style class.

    • Dancers 5- are required to do only one tech class in addition to their comp class. Stretch and style is optional.

    • Dancers are allowed two unexcused absences per team.
Unexcused absences do not include illness, school related activities, or pre-approval by the teacher. There will be NO excused absences the two weeks prior to a competition. All missed technique classes can be made up but must be done within the same month. An alternate will be asked to step in If a student misses too often.

    • Dolce will have at least one Master Class teacher come in. This is a mandatory class for all team members 9 and up. Days and times for these classes will be announced as soon as possible. ($70-100 per class)

    • Dancers must arrive 10 minutes before class and be ready to go when the class starts.

    • If a dancer chooses to add their solo to a competition after we have submitted payment, entry fees will be more than their listed amount. Once the schedule is posted, entering is no longer permitted.

    • You must attend all scheduled competitions. If you have a conflict with one of the comps, we may be able to make special requests. Some competitions charge for these requests. If you are needing these accommodations you will be responsible for the fee.

    • No one is allowed to leave nationals until the final awards, if they are national champions or grand national champions they are to remain until the very end to take a picture for the competitions website. No excuses, no exception. If you are flying home you are to do so the following day or late after awards.

    • All tuition and comp fees must be paid in the month they are due.

FAQs

Can a competition dancer take additional classes elsewhere?

Dancers cannot compete with any other competitive dance studios, be a member of the Dolce Allstar team, or take technique classes/dance lessons anywhere else without Kendra's approval. We want all of our dancers to perform the technique as taught at Dolce; other teachers and studios may have a different way to prep for turns, hold their hands, etc., which confuses dancers. This does not include master classes, intensives, or conventions. The decision to not have the dancers be on both Allstar and Comp was made because of the conflicting schedules.

How can I get a solo and what should I know if I get one?

Solos are up to the teacher's discretion and are not guaranteed by request. Solos, duets, and trios are only offered to dancers competing on Dolce Travel or Performing Competition Teams. Outside choreography is allowed; however, all songs must be approved by Kendra prior. If outside choreography is used, a Dolce Comp teacher must run any solos, duets, or trios.

How many teams will I be placed on?

The teaching staff will determine the number of teams a dancer makes, however, the minimum required is two. Please ensure to write on your competition tryout form the maximum number of teams your student should be considered for.

Can I take a private lesson if I am not on a team?

Private lessons are reserved for Dolce Team Members first as space and time spots are limited.
